Retail Revolution and Rebranding: World Diamond Day Drives Demand as Indian LGD Market Expands
While the mining sector struggles, the retail landscape for diamonds is bifurcating dramatically, marked by aggressive expansion in the lab-grown sector and a unified marketing push to save the natural stone.
The Rise of Lab-Grown Retail
In the most significant retail development of the quarter, Limelight Lab Grown Diamonds has announced a massive expansion across India, launching 25 new stores in the first quarter of FY26 alone. This move will expand the brand’s footprint to over 85 stores nationwide, with a long-term roadmap to reach 200 stores by 2027 .
Pooja Madhavan, Founder and MD of Limelight, stated that the expansion is about “shaping consumer mindsets towards smarter, more sustainable luxury.” The push into Tier 2 cities and metros underscores a powerful shift in consumer behavior where “aspiration meets conscious consumption” .
The Defense of Natural Diamonds
In a coordinated effort to counter the narrative that natural diamonds are obsolete, the Natural Diamond Council (NDC) launched the inaugural “World Diamond Day” on April 8, 2026. The social-first movement proved to be a significant success, bringing together stakeholders from over 50 countries, including miners, luxury houses like Boucheron, and auction giants Sotheby’s and Christie’s .
The campaign resulted in a 30% spike in global search demand for natural diamonds and a near doubling of #NaturalDiamonds social media activity within a 24-hour period. The NDC reported that the initiative engaged over 70,000 participants at the Bharat Diamond Bourse alone, reaching over 45 million users in India and the Middle East .
